Our Strategy

Access to information is fundamental for Development, Security and the Protection of Human Rights. Yet, whilst we have never had so many facts and figures at our fingertips, ensuring our decisions are well informed is not always certain. Given the sheer quantity of data freely available, the instructive or essential details are not always easy to uncover. Moreover, due to its nature, data on criminal activities is limited, and not always available.

Whilst the informed selection and availability of such data is thus essential, its methodological transfer must also be guaranteed through effective networking and coordinated information sharing. The Training and Advanced Education (TAE) Unit thus plays a central role in meeting UNICRI’s specific targets: integrated knowledge management through research and dissemination of relevant information on crime prevention and criminal justice.

Partnerships with high-level universities and other educational institutions are rapidly becoming a major tool and the TAE Unit remains committed to strengthening existing partnerships, as well as developing new ventures with other academic institutions, international organizations, research centres and individual experts worldwide.

New Masters degree programmes and short courses which fall within the scope of UNICRI’s specific expertise in crime prevention and criminal justice are being developed, whilst educational institutions around the world are being given increased support in their application of UNICRI’s advanced training methodologies.

In this context, a special focus is given to education and training in developing countries at a graduate and post-graduate as well as professional level in order to strengthen the criminal justice system and the rule of law. Furthermore, the TAE Unit is giving increased support to academic and para-academic institutions in the Global South to help in the development of activities and initiatives designed to benefit the public at large.

Tailor-made specialized training programmes for judicial personnel continue to be delivered in-house or on the field upon the request of member states.
