The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) in collaboration with the International Criminal Court Office of Public Counsel for the Defence (ICC-OPCD) and the generous sponsorship of Compagnia di San Paolo, together with the support of the International Association of Lawyers (Union Internationale des Avocats - UIA), will host a 4-day Seminar on International Criminal Law Defence at the United Nations Campus in Torino. The Seminar represents a unique opportunity to acquire a deep understanding of defence in the area of international criminal law, thanks to the participation of renowned experts.

The Seminar, which will be organized within the framework of the LL.M. in International Crime and Justice programme, jointly organized by UNICRI and UNITO (University of Torino), is a combination of lectures and practical exercises. Participants will attend an introductory session on international criminal law and procedure on the first day of the event. They will then join the LL.M. students who come from 28 different countries, for the remainder of the activities. The Seminar will start on Monday, 2 April 2011 at 9.15.

The Seminar is geared towards those interested in the practice of international criminal law whether in national or international courts, as well as to those who work with organizations involved in this area. More specifically, it is addressed to attorneys, legal and judicial personnel, law enforcement and governmental officers.

The Seminar will be held in English. Minimum requirements are a degree in law or other equivalent qualifications and good written and verbal English skills.

The Torino Bar Association recognises 24 training credits for this activity.

The lectures and practical exercises will take place from Monday, 2 April, through Thursday, 5 April, from 9.30 to 17.00.

Course Topics include:

  • Basic principles of International Criminal Law.
  • Introduction to the ICC Rules of Procedure and Evidence.
  • Introduction and overview of International Criminal Defence.
  • Defence Counsel qualifications and training - setting up a defence team.
  • Preparation of strategies for defence.
  • Defence investigations.
  • Purpose of disclosure and use of evidence.
  • Common challenges raised against the Prosecution's case.
  • Sources of case law.
  • How to structure legal arguments.
  • Direct and cross-examination by the Defence.
  • Common grounds of appeal and how to preserve the record for appeal.

Fees and accommodation

  • General Registration fee: € 600
  • Fee for LL.M., Ph.D. and J.D. students from other Universities, UIA Members and Torino Bar Members: € 500
  • A limited number of scholarships is available (covering registration fee, meals and accommodation at the UN Campus for 4 nights in a standard guest room based on double occupancy)

The registration fee does not include meals and accommodation. A coffee lounge and a canteen, as well as residential facilities, are present at the UN Campus.

For those needing meals and accommodation:

  • 5 Nights Accommodation at the UN Campus (equivalent of a 3½ star hotel) plus registration fee: € 970 (€ 870 for reduced fee), Sunday - Friday, including meals on the UN Campus.
  • 4 Nights Accommodation at the UN Campus plus registration fee: € 905 (€ 805 for reduced fee), Sunday - Thursday, including meals on the UN Campus.
  • Package prices are per person based on double occupancy in a standard guest room. If you prefer a single room, a supplement of € 25 euro per night will be charged.

The full payment has to be done, upon acceptance and confirmation by UNICRI, no later than 27 March 2012.

Cancellation and Refunds

In the event of a cancellation, registration fees will not be refunded.
