Training and Advanced Education Unit (TAE) Post-Graduate Education
Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Crime and Justice
6. Assessment and Master's Degree
In order to test the skills acquired during the LL.M., students undergo e-learning and on-campus assessments. They also have to write and discuss a final research paper. Furthermore, to receive the LL.M. degree, a successful completion of 1,500 hours of instruction is necessary. Students attain the required 1,500 hours as follows:
- E-learning: 150 hours of distance learning, approximately 15 to 18 hours weekly
- On-campus: daily attendance is compulsory for lectures and practical exercises
- Lectures are held both in the morning and in the afternoon, at the UN Campus, at Viale Maestri del Lavoro 10, Turin, Italy
- 660 hours of compulsory lecture attendance
- 690 hours of compulsory practical exercises and individual/group study
The Master's degree grants 60 university credits (ECTS) to candidates who receive passing marks in all assessed subjects.
Examinations are graded according to a scale ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 as a passing mark. A "cum laude" may be added to the highest grade (30, 30 e lode) as a mention of special distinction. All examination results are used to calculate the overall degree mark on a scale of 0-110. The final grade is based on exam results plus preparation, writing, and defence of the final research paper with members of the Scientific Committee. The minimum passing score is 66 and students who obtain full marks of 110 may be awarded “summa cum laude” (110 e lode). The final grade is based on the Italian evaluation system, where the highest score is 110/110.
The final research paper must be submitted in July. Students can rely on bibliographic resources available at the University of Turin libraries and at the UNICRI library, which contains more than 18,000 monographs, 1,250 journals, yearbooks, and include access to online journals, full-text articles and scientific/legal databases. A limited number of PCs are available, free of charge, at UNICRI for use during the on-campus module after class hours.
At the end of the course, the LL.M. Degree is awarded by the University of Turin to those who:
- Obtained a total of 60 University credits (received passing marks in all assessed subjects), and
- Receive a passing mark on the final research paper and defence, and
- Attain the minimum average of on-campus attendance (attended at least 2/3 of each weekly schedule and at least 75% of the total programme/schedule).
