Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Crime and Justice

4. Methodology

The LL.M. is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach integrating theory and practice, favouring active exchanges between participants, tutors and lecturers. Trainers are national and international experts who combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

The Master is structured in two modules, one involving distance learning and the other set in a classroom environment. The e-learning module (November 2012-January 2013) provides a preliminary and uniform background through an electronic platform that allows students to work from their own countries. The e-learning activities are followed by the on-campus module. Upon arrival in Turin, participants take a written examination on their distance learning studies.

The on-campus module (January–July 2013) is composed of theoretical lectures, seminars and practical exercises. The course includes an extensive analysis of the activities of international criminal jurisdictions, including international criminal tribunals and special courts. During this module, assessed practical exercises include a mock trial, a moot court, field exercises with the Italian Army, and other activities organized in cooperation with international organizations, NGOs, research institutions, military training centres, and other entities belonging to the UN system. The objective of such activities is to provide participants with concrete skills and knowledge of current issues in the field of international criminal law. Lecturers facilitate opportunities for group discussions, critical inputs and insights on current issues in international crime and justice.

The last month of the on-campus module is devoted to the preparation of the final research paper, the defence of which shall close the LL.M.
