Justice, Protection and Ethics

UNICRI seeks to strengthen the governance of judicial institutions and to support judicial reform and operational capacity building. The Institute promotes the rule of law and the adoption of international standards in the field of crime prevention and the protection of human rights.

In particular, UNICRI promotes the protection of vulnerable people, such as women and children at risk.

The establishment of the rule of law requires developing different levels of intervention and policies designed to improve a shared culture that respects human rights. Within its projects, UNICRI organizes parallel campaigns and develops activities to enhance civil society and institutional awareness on justice issues.

UNICRI Justice Protection and Ethics activities aim to supporting countries in making the best use of international expertise and best practices and in setting up appropriate structures and institutions. UNICRI provides legal technical assistance and interdisciplinary advanced training. The Institute embraces projects pertaining to juvenile justice, protection of children’s rights, treatment of offenders, countering corruption as well as advanced training programmes aimed at promoting a fair criminal justice system capable of dealing effectively with serious crimes.

The projects are carried out worldwide with special attention to the African , Balkan and Latin America regions.

To enhance the effectiveness of actions and programs on Juvenile Justice UNICRI places an enormous importance on interagency cooperation and partnerships.
The Institute recently became a Member of the Interagency Panel on Juvenile Justice (formerly known as the Inter-Agency Coordination Panel on Juvenile Justice), created by ECOSOC resolution 1997/30 which aims at coordinating international technical advice and assistance in juvenile justice provided by UN agencies and non-governmental organisations under the guidance of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
